Singapore Residence & Exhibition Report

With the understanding that creative industry is a global industry, this past year CCC has supported the global debuts of Shizuoka creatives in 2 programs. Resident creatives participated in the "Singapore Design Festival 2009" and "Creator-in-Residence" programs in Singapore.

This exhibit will feature an activity report of 2 resident designers who participated in the residence program and a recreation of the "ccc character festival" from the Singapore Design Festival.

ccc character festival

Introduction of 3 Shizuoka-based creatives working with character contents. A installation of "kawaii" character design and character animation.

Participating Creatives
Atelier SANGO
Kawauchi started Atelier SANGO in Shizuoka City in 2001. From 2D to 3D, clay work to animation, he is involved in a variety of creative work. Works include event posters, store displays, original objects . He also conducts workshops and gives classes at the Shizuoka Professional School of Design

Planet Planter
Plant Planter is a character creation team based in Shizuoka City. Current work includes character development with a publishing company, character goods planning with a toy manufacturer, as well as local PR character planning and workshop production.

Hexaproject
Hexa project is a group of individuals who organize a variety of art and design events producing a hybrid creative scene.  Moving images, advertising, design planning/production and an alternative art space – Hexa Project's broad range of interests and design sensibilities have culminated in a series of art exhibitions and design projects in Japan and abroad.

About the ccc character festival & Singapore Design Festival 2009
CCC residents Atelier SANGO & Planet Planter as well as NPO Hexaproject took part in the Singpaore Design Festival 2009 which was held from November 20 to 30, 2009. The festival's theme this year was "Design 2050: Possibilities for Tomorrow". Works and events along this theme took place at over 40 places around Singapore. CCC's "ccc character festival" was held at one of the main event hubs, Old City Hall. Around 3000 came to experience and enjoy Japan's unique contents business of character design.

Creator-in-Residence

CCC resident creatives Keita Hanazawa (mag design labo.) and Chie Suzuki (Chiwalab) participated in a residence in Singapore for 44 days from October 28–November 30, 2009. With the SIngaporean plastics company Meiban they worked on product development and conducted workshops. This exhibit will report on their activity in exhibit format.

Keita Hanazawa, mag design labo.
After studying oil painting, Hanazawa worked at a furniture manufacturer where he was responsible from design planning to finished product for furniture and living goods. He then moved to Hokkaido where he acquired a second-level engineer certification. mag-design-labo was started after returning to Shizuoka. Along the theme of “borders”, mag seeks art and design from a variety of activities and does not limit designs, but falls for items that need design that appeals to the senses.

Chie Suzuki, Chiwalab
Formed in 2007. Chee: after working as a shoe designer, stationary designer and craft instructor, she currently designs Geta sandals and bags as well as works with illustration, lacquerware, lacquer art and web design. Working under Hanae Mori, Chee presented an exhibit in Omotesando in 2006 which received high-acclaim from Ippolito Etro. Also exhibited at the Art Tower Mito in July 2009.

About the creator-in-residence
The "Creator-in-Residence" is a new international cooperation project by DesignSingapore Council, Shizuoka City and the center for creative communications (ccc). By experiencing a foreign environment and new stimuli while pursuing creative work, the project aims to foster international level creatives and business network through the exchange of creatives from both countries.In 2010 we are planning on continuing the exchange with a SIngaporean creative coming to Shizuoka.
