We often experience time through feeling, by the movement of the sun or the emptiness of our stomachs. But with a clock, time is experienced logically. A bit boring possibly, but the thought that anyone can see the abstract concept of time from a clock is amazing and can be the stepping stone to enjoying each day more fully. For this exhibit, a subjective approach to the functional clock is taken to present time in artistic form. A hushed place, heightened feeling, the whispered sounds and movement of the art work—this space of time where one can experience yourself at that very moment is waiting for you. (Ryozo Takashima)
■ Judges Comments
From seconds to a lifetime, history is presented in a clock format. Time, from the 2010 year lifetime of the human race to the standard time we all come to expect. The artist will challenge to express wholly and conceptually his long standing theme of time. I am looking forward to seeing how this presentation of time will leave an imprint on visitors.
(Shiriagari Kotobuki)
Takashima's work is conceptual yet at the same time simple and easy to understand. With a background in graphic design, even his visuals were well put together; one can tell he is an artist who has experience with competitions. I have seen his past work using large amounts of dice and it was very memorable. For this exhibit he has developed further his work with clocks, using 2011 clock hands. I am confident in this exhibit and yet wonder how he will present these 2011 clocks as there are many possibilities. I am looking forward to seeing the result.
